Afro American Hair Products Warning

Afro American Hair

We’ve all known for years that the ingredients in hair relaxers, hair straighteners, perms and hair colors can be harmful to our hair and scalp. But, this doesn’t deter us from our quest for beauty.

Hair straighteners, hair relaxers and hair extensions can break, burn and otherwise damage the hair and scalp. It’s easy to believe that when you can buy these hair care products off the shelves that they must be safe, or at least safe to use at home . . . but it’s simply not always true.

“Afro American Hair Warning”In a recent article in Dermatology Times, by Paula Moyer, Dr. Marta Rendon M.D. associate clinical professor at both the University of Miami and Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, sums up her warning by saying, “They need to know that if something itches or burns, it’s not good for them.”

Pay Attention

“Several of the hair straightening products and practices can make things worse, because they break, burn and irritate the hair, and can cause allergic dermatitis of the scalp,” Dr. Rendon says. So-called “hair relaxing” agents are also often used by patients of Afro American heritage or others with very curly hair. In these hair care products, which loosen the curl and make the hair easier to blow dry and comb, the active ingredient is typically lye, which can also cause allergic contact dermatitis, dry scalp, and scalp infections.”

Some of the newer hair straightening products and procedures, like Brazilian treatments or Japanese straightening treatments are advertised as “formaldehyde-free.”  Earlier hair straightening products contained formaldehyde, which is a carcinogen and can cause life-threatening allergic reactions.

Afro American hair is much more fragile than Asian or Caucasian hair. Afro Americans have fewer follicles per inch on the scalp making the hair less dense. The Afro American hair type also has less strength, breaks easily and is difficult to comb.

“Patients who use hair straighteners, hair relaxers, blow dryers and flat irons can eventually lose their hair, Dr. Rendon says. “The hair just can’t tolerate all these procedures.” Other procedures that can cause traction alopecia are the gluing of hair extensions to the scalp and the fusing of hair strands to give the illusion of more volume. Some hair extensions are now fastened with clips, which create less traction than glue.

I learned early on in beauty school that any scalp disorder needs to be referred to a dermatologist immediately. Dr. Rendon points out that timing is critical to being able to influence the ability to treat the condition. “We get them very early or very late,” Dr. Rendon says. “Problems that are fairly new are more likely to be reversed, but those of long duration can cause permanent hair loss due to scarring.”

“Brazilian treatments are often smuggled in and done in someones kitchen, often with disastrous consequences,” Dr. Rendon says. “We can teach patients to ask their hairdressers to tell them the manufacturers of the hair care products they use, and to stick with reputable companies.”

“The major cosmetics companies have done their homework to make sure that their products are safe,” Dr. Rendon says. Dermatologists can also teach patients to be suspicious of discomfort, she says. “They need to know that if something itches or burns, it’s not good for them.”

Tips for styling naturally curly hair

Anyone who was born with naturally curly hair knows that it can be both a blessing and a curse. Because it essentially grows in a zigzag formation, it takes longer to attain a certain length than it would if it were straight. It is also prone to dryness, and on humid days it seems like there's nothing you can do to keep it under control! But on the plus side, it's a look that is highly sought-after and can be absolutely stunning if you know how to style it properly.

curly brunette

First of all, keep in mind that curly hair almost always looks best when it is long, as the length allows for the curls to be properly weighed down. All long hair is beautiful, but long curly hair is nothing short of captivating! The best styles are those cut with layers, because the layers allow your hair to sit correctly and avoid the dreaded 'pyramid head'. Remember that a hairstylist who has curly hair herself is going to be your best bet for getting the ideal cut, and if you see a woman with perfect curly hair, don't be afraid to ask her who cuts it! You'll make her day and possibly find the ideal hairstylist, and there are few things more valuable than that.

Secondly, don't shampoo it every day or you'll risk drying it out further. Curly hair is usually more brittle than straight or wavy hair, so keeping the natural oils in place is a must. When you do shampoo, use products designed for your hair type, plus a good quality conditioner (salon quality is best). Blot your hair gently with a towel, apply a serum and allow it to dry naturally. Serums that contain 'cones' - i.e. silicones like dimethicone - are usually the way to go, but your hairstylist will be able to help you find the right one for your hair's needs.

blonde curly hair

Perhaps the biggest curly hair styling no-no is the hairbrush - if you own one, then toss it out now! Brushing curly hair will cause nothing but frizz, which is the last thing a curly girl wants. Using a wide-toothed comb or 'afro' comb is by far the best option, as you want to separate your curls, not obliterate them. Another major no-no is using the hottest setting on your hairdryer. As mentioned earlier, natural air-drying is the best choice (this goes for all hair types, not just the curly ones) but if you absolutely must blow-dry, then use it on the coolest setting, apply a heat-protective product and attach the diffuser.

Every now and then you'll get the urge to straighten your hair. That's okay, provided that you're not doing it every day; if you are then it's time that you embraced the beauty of your curls. Curly hair should be straightened no more than once a week. Investing in the best ionic straightener you can afford is essential - I always recommend the GHD, as a cheap and nasty version will kill your hair in the long run.

curly updo

When it comes to putting your hair up, naturally curly haired women really are blessed because the body and texture needed to make updos look their best is built in to your hair. Romantic updos with a few tendrils hanging down look gorgeous and take a matter of minutes to create. Whether you use hairpins, a clip or a hair elastic is up to you; play with your hair in your leisure time and see what looks you can come up with. A half-up, half-down style is also a beautiful do for those with curls, and even a simple ponytail will look great if your hair is cut with layers. Whatever you do, don't use a rubber band, and if you put something in your hair that brings more than three hairs with it when it's removed, then throw it out immediately.

While there will still be days when your hair feels uncontrollable, just remember that what looks like a chaotic mess to you will be a sensual, romantic cloud to someone else. Embracing the wild beauty of your hair is a far superior course of action than trying to turn it into something that it's not. And why would you want lank, boring hair anyway? Curly hair is nothing short of enviable, so if it comes naturally to you, then you're very lucky indeed.

Kim Kardashian Goes Blonde Hair, Can You?

Kim Kardashian Goes Blonde Hair

Kim Kardashian’s blonde hair is not an easy haircolor change!

Remember a short while back when Kim Kardashian debuted blonde hair in the form of a hair piece? Well it looks like Kim Kardashian liked the look enough to commit. She showed off her new blonde hair hue at The Teen Choice Awards Sunday night. I had to do a double take when I saw this picture of her because it didn’t even look like the exotic looking star that I’m used to.

Although she doesn’t mention it in her blog or interviews, I think that the switch is partly due to the fact that she recently broke up with long time boyfriend, Reggie Bush. I assume she wanted a drastic change and boy, did she get it! I definitely prefer Kim Kardashian with her darker hue ... the blonde hair takes away from her natural beauty and makes her blend in with the rest of young Hollywood. Her exotic features are a perfect match for her naturally dark hair.

Kim Kardashian Hairstyle

Kim mentioned in her blog that it took her an entire glam squad to create this blonde hair look, so if you are a brunette thinking of a drastic change like Kim Kardashian’s, think of all the work that went into her new blonde hair hue. Getting blonde hair out of dark hair requires quite a bit of time and investment up front, not to mention the maintenance required.

If I were to do this on one of my clients, I would charge for the price of a double process full weave and color combined. The price of something like this would easily start at $150 and go up from there. If the cost is worth it to you to get your hair like Kim Kardashian’s, then next I would suggest thinking of the time involved. Achieving this blonde hair color from someone who currently has dark locks would take several hours initially and at least two to three hours for each touch up. Touch ups would need to be done every 4-6 weeks.

As you can see, getting blonde hair from your dark hair can be a big step. It’s no wonder that it took an entire glam squad to create the look on Kim Kardashian. If you have colored your hair over and over in the past few years, I would suggest staying away from this drastic of a change. Your hair would most likely be too fragile from past damage to handle the switch. However, if your hair is in a virgin state (meaning it has never been colored), going with blonde hair might be a good option for you. Talk with a professional hairdresser about your individual hair and see what is best for you.

Cool and modern short haircuts pictures 2010

For a cool short haircut there are no certain rules for one specific cut, because the lengths of different short haircuts vary. There are a few short haircuts styles: super short, jaw length and chin length fashions. Short haircuts are versatile and with some added color you can sport a chic and feminine hairstyle.

Cool and modern short haircuts pictures 2010

When contemplating a super short haircut you have to be very certain before you decide to take the leap. A great tip is to pull your hair back and envision what you would look like with shorter hair. Generally oval facial shapes carry this style very well, however if your face is too long, wide or round you should opt for a longer short haircut.

A super short haircut is refreshingly manageable, a wash and go style if you will. These cuts are not for the faint of heart though, due to them being the shortest, but with ample self-confidence this style can be pulled off superbly. Layers in varying lengths add a hint of volume. You can have textured pixie bangs or leave them a bit longer and style them at any angle.

Sharon Stone Fashion, Hairstyle, Makeup

The Shangri-la Hotel was the site of the “A Smile For Every Child” gala. The hotel is located in Santa Monica, California. Actress Sharon Stone was one of the many attendees.

Sharon Stone Fashion, Hairstyle, Makeup

Sharon always looks great and this even was no exception. She wore her makeup and hair as perfect as ever. Her makeup was simple – a little mascara, black eyeliner on top and bottom, blush, and a dark pink lipstick. The colors were perfect for her. She had her hair cut in a short, layered bob. Her bangs were wispy, and traced across her forehead. She had her hair parted in the center and let it frame her face. It was a great style for her.

Sharon Stone Fashion, Hairstyle, Makeup

Sharon wore a khaki colored dress that came to her knees. The sleeves were styled like a tank top and it had a low cut V-neck. Swaths of the same colored material swooped around her sides, falling shorter than her skirt hem in back while staying between her breastbone and hipbone in front; they were gathered at the neckline at the bottom of the V. The style of her dress was new and interesting, a great update on what could have been a very boring tan dress. Her shoes were cute, tan, high-heeled wedge sandals that looked very comfortable. She kept her accessories simple. She wore a silver and gold bangle bracelet that went great with her outfit and she carried a clutch purse that was khaki and golden-brown. Sharon took a simple dress and turned it into a great style.
